Turlough Parade, Marino - House extension and renovation:
The terraced house which has been in the family since shortly after construction houses 3 generations of the family and no longer met the family’s needs, requiring expansion and modernisation to provide an adequate living environment.
The brief for the project was to provide an additional bedroom and bathroom at ground floor level to provide accommodation for the grandmother of the family.
More living space was also required with emphasis on getting south light into the new living spaces as previously the sunlight that the house received was limited to East to the rear and West light to the front.
The main design proposals were to locate the downstairs bedroom and bathroom in the existing family room space and provide an extension consisting of a new open plan kitchen/dining/family room area to the rear which will be flooded with southlight. The original hallway from the front door to the rear of the house, was reinstated thus eliminating the sitting room acting also as a circulation space.
The extension has a shallow monopitch roof which gives a feeling of space and orientates it to the south and therefore the sun, for much of the day.
