Bonniconlon House, Mayo:

This project is for the provision of a new 3 bedroom family house on a greenfield house in a rural setting on the outskirts of the village of Bonniconlon, Co. Mayo.

The brief was to provide a 2 storey 3 bedroom home specific to the site and including some local stone elements and with the capacity for possible future expansion. The clients requested a large open plan living area and a visual and physical link between this area and the first floor.

The design solution located the house centrally but slightly nearer the front of the site in order to maximise elevation for the views it would give and to retain a large southwest facing private rear garden. Stone is proposed on the garden walls rather then the house itself so expense of the natural stone can be put off and these walls constructed when budget allows, while the clients can still in the future have the natural stone they desire. These garden walls shoot from various corners of the house to the boundary of the site thus creating specifically themed garden areas (front manicured garden, wild garden, parking area + large rear garden) and specific terraces and a yard between these garden spaces and the house itself.

The house is to have white rendered walls, a pitched dark slate roof and timber windows due to the appeal of this palate of materials to the clients and the prominence of these materials locally which aided the design in receiving planning permission. A relatively regular front elevation is presented to the public road and entrance to the site but behind this the roofs levels are manipulated, the form is broken down and large openings allow the creation of bright and varied internal spaces.

A large open plan kitchen/dining/living has distinct spaces for each of its functions with the manipulation of the ceiling and floor levels allowing each to have an individual identity. A 'bridge' to the master bedroom overlooks the tall dining area creating the clients' desire of a link between the two floors.
